The History of Iron Workers starts in the late 1880, steel had virtually replaced wood and stone as the primary load-carrying material in the erection of bridges and buildings. This abrupt change in structural materials brought about a demand for a new type of worker- bridge-tradesmen and architectural ironworkers. These Ironworkers became known as “cowboys in the sky.”

Is an Ironworker Apprenticeship right for me?

As an Ironworker Apprentice you must enjoy working with your hands, being creative and be a good problem solver. It’s important to like the outdoors, enjoy working with a team, and not be afraid of heights.

As an Ironworker Apprentice you could build bridges office towers, highways, stadiums, and create ornamental finishes. As an Ironworker Apprentice you will learn how to read blueprints, Welding and Burning Equipment, unload, erect and connect fabricated iron beams to form the project skeleton, erect and install pre-cast beams, columns, and panels. You may also learn things like installing metal windows into a building’s masonry or wooden openings. How to reinforce concrete structures, and how to install and erect metal stairways, catwalks, gratings, doors, railings, fencing, elevator fronts, and building entrances. You may operate power hoists, cranes, derricks, forklifts, and aerial lifts as well.

Approximate Ironworker wages typically start from $49,000 and go up to $70,000

Beginner level: $25.52/hr

Junior level: $27.34/hr

Mid- level: $29.17//hr

Senior level: $34.64/hr

Top level: $36.46/ /hr

Requirements to Apply:

Official High School Transcripts or GED

18 years of age or older

All applicants will be given a physical test as Ironwork is physically demanding work.

Be willing to travel for work in Idaho and Montana
